Manzi Leon
Manzi Léon is a self-taught Rwandan visual and digital artist whose work is rooted in personal experience, emotion, and contemporary African identity. Creating art is both an escape and a form of expression for Léon, giving him the freedom and confidence to explore the realities, challenges, and values that shape everyday life.
Known for his expressive impasto and painterly style, Léon builds his compositions through energetic brushstrokes, rich textures, and layered color. His paintings and digital artworks are deeply influenced by his upbringing and, in particular, the sacrifices he witnessed his mother make for his family. That experience became a lasting source of inspiration, shaping his admiration for the strength, resilience, beauty, and contributions of Black women within families and communities around the world.
Through portraiture and figurative contemporary art, Léon celebrates women while exploring themes of identity, family, love, resilience, culture, and the Black experience. His work combines deeply personal storytelling with a broader reflection on modern African life.
As an emerging voice in contemporary African art, Manzi Léon has exhibited internationally in Rwanda, Germany, and the United States. His work has entered private and public collections across Africa and beyond, including collections associated with Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo, Art life Matters, and collectors in Rwanda, Ghana, South Africa, and the United States.
